![]() There was only one hall tree for all the rain gear. ![]() One of us found her shoes still a little damp in the morning. We checked them after dinner, and found the wads of newspaper quite wet, so we replaced them. Soon after we arrived we stuffed our wet boots with the newspapers that they provided to speed up the drying. She showed us where we could hang our raincoats and leave the boots in the foyer and then showed our rooms. We arrived here after walking through the crags in the wind and rain around 7 pm. I had the Eggs Benedict and I thought it perfectly fine despite it not swimming in the usual goopy sauce you get at less expensive breakfast locations. I actually felt I could linger and enjoy some extra toast and jam with my coffee and not bog myself down on the trail. After several consecutive B&B breakfasts of too much food, I found the Vallum's offering to be refreshing and of trail-worthy quantities. There are some complaints that the breakfast servings are skimpy. I did not use the laundry service but I did notice more than a few of the guests that evening had. TV/cable reception was great but wifi was only available in the guest lounge. The room was a tad on the small side, but that's the standard arrangement on these kinds of tours. Not in the universe I inhabit, and I have stayed in Motel 6s in that person's state. One of my countrymen has suggested this site has the qualities of the Motel 6 chain in the US. ![]() Perhaps it seemed all the more nicer because of the horrid condition of our previous night's stay, but I recall the bathroom being especially nice. The room was very up-to-date and well maintained. We were in the main house, just a door or two down from the office window and guest lounge. It seems from my reading of other reviews, there are two buildings - the main house and an 'annex'. Upon finally arriving, and receiving the now common admonition about taking off our hiking boots, we were quickly shown our room. Having checked out the accommodations on the internet prior to the walk, I could recognize it well off in the distance. We stayed one night here after a hard day on the Hadrian's Wall path. If we are ever in the area again, we will definitely be staying there. The evening meal in particular stands out. She is putting a lot of effort into making Vallum Lodge a premier place to stay and she is succeeding. We particularly enjoyed time relaxing and visiting with Samantha and hearing about her adventurous life and how she came to be here. We enjoyed our stay and highly recommend it to anyone walking Hadrian's Wall. There was a macaroon cookie that was heavenly. We selected the sandwich the day before and when we picked it up in the morning, we we able to select from an assortment of snacks, fruit, and drinks. ![]() We needed to go light after the meal the night before so we opted for the eggs and smoked salmon. ![]() We chose our breakfast from a rather extensive menu. One of us made use of the foot bath/massage in the room. The room was very comfortable with a nice view to the north toward the Wall. I don't know how we ate as much as we did, but we were certainly fueled for the walk the next day. It was a relaxed couple hours of excellent food and engaging conversations. For a very modest price it included a bottle of French wine, a soup starter, a main course of beef, potatoes, and vegetables, and the most indescribably delicious rhubarb crumble you can ever hope to find. Samantha prepared us a meal that surpassed all expectations. We had arranged to have an evening meal at Vallum Lodge as we're always looking for options besides pub food. A short walk back to Twice Brewed Brew House and a couple pints later and we were ready to settle in for the night. We had a long, but wonderful walk along the crags that day and were ready to relax when we arrived at Vallum Lodge. ![]()
